The Milwaukee Courier Congratulates Wisconsin Primary Winners on Solidifying their Position for Upcoming November Election

On Tuesday, August 9, Milwaukee voters headed to the polls to vote in a variety of local and state elections. Approximately 18 percent turned out for the Wisconsin fall primary election. The results show that the incumbents had a good night.

Wisconsin 4th Congress District

Incumbent Congresswoman Gwen Moore soundly defeated challenger Gary George by approximately 85 percent making this the second time in two years that Moore has defeated George for this seat.

Moore has served the 4th Congressional District since 2005.

Moore will serve another two year term in Congress because there will be no Republican challenger in the November election.

State Senate-District 4

After a highly publicized campaign, incumbent Lena Taylor won decisively over Representative Mandela Barnes.

Barnes was elected to the State Assembly in 2012 and left the seat to run for the senate.

Taylor has held the state senate seat since 2004.

State Senate-District 6

State Representative LaTonya Johnson defeated two challengers, Thomas Harris and Michael Bonds with 61 percent of the vote on Tuesday for the Wisconsin 6th Senate District seat.

Johnson served two terms as State Representative for the 17th Assembly District.

State Assembly-District 11

Jason Fields, who was defeated in the 2012 primary by Mandela Barnes once again, captured the seat by 59 percent against Darrol Gibson.

The seat was left open after Barnes vacated it for his run for the senate. Barnes lost the senate race to Lena Taylor.

State Assembly-District 16

Leon Young successful in defeating 3 challengers, Edgar Lin, Brandy Bond and Stephen Jansen for the State Assembly-District 16 seat.

Young, a 24 year incumbent has represented the district since 1992.

State Assembly-District 17

David Crowley won the State Representative District 17 seat with over 57 percent of the vote. Crowley faced challengers Kim Burns and Marcus Hart.

Crowley previously worked with Russ Feingold and Nikiya Harris Dodd.

The seat was left vacant a by LaTonya Johnson who won the primary for the Wisconsin Senate.

Milwaukee County District Attorney

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm defeated Attorney Verona Swanigan in the primary election by 65 percent. Incumbent Chisholm was first elected district attorney in 2006.

There were no Republican candidates for the district attorney office so Chisholm will have no competition in November.

The fall general election is Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
