Memorial service to honor Winston Van Horne

October 3, 2013

The University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and its Department of Africology will host a memorial service for Professor Winston Van Horne, who passed away on May 24, 2013. The celebration of his legacy begins at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Helen Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd. The public is welcome.

Van Horne made many contributions to UW-Milwaukee and to his discipline since joining the faculty in 1978.

He is credited with helping transform the Afro-American Studies Program into the Department of Africology; chairing the department three times; creating the word “Africology”; and authoring the new Ph.D. program in Africology.

He served on the faculty senate since 1980 and directed the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity for 10 years.

Prior to his death, Mitchell Hall room 206 had been named the Winston Van Horne Seminar Room to honor his accomplishments.

Given his enormous impact on the field of Africology, colleagues from around the nation have been invited to attend the ceremony.

For more information, contact Doreatha Mbalia, Africology chair, at dmbalia@uwm.edu or (414) 229-5080.
