Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority bring annual conferences, comedian Finesse Mitchell to ‘Brew City’
March Madness takes on a new meaning in Milwaukee. On March 14-17, 2013, the men of the North Central Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will conduct their 2013 North Central
Province Council. Simultaneously, the ladies of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will host their 73rd Central Region Conference by celebrating the social theme, “Indy Comes to Milwaukee” as a way to acknowledge both organizations founding in Indiana.
Under the direction of the North Central Province Director Korlon L. Kilpatrick II and Central Region Director Pamela Kadirifu, both conferences will bring together undergraduate and graduate chapters of both organizations from across the Midwest to partake in a host of professional, business, social, and outreach events, including the “Healthy Kappa, Healthy Communities” Health Fair (Friday, March 15th and Saturday, March 16th) at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee to demonstrate the organization’s continued commitment to health and wellness measurement tools for its membership, their families and surrounding communities.
The Health Fair, which is organized by the Milwaukee Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, the 2013 North Central Province Council host chapter, is free and open to the public and features blood pressure testing, glucose testing, cancer information, oral health assessments, mental health assessments, sickle cell blood drive, CPR demonstrations, Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) training, and iPhone/Android mobile emergency application demonstrations offered by local healthcare professionals.
Milwaukee Alumni Chapter president Scott Carroll says “This is an exciting time for our chapter! Giving back and uplifting the community is what drives the work of our organization. What better way to do this than through engaging the public in the discussion of healthy living.”
The chapter’s commitment to uplifting and bettering the city of Milwaukee is further exemplified in the community service initiatives that will coincide with the conference.
The chapter’s Kappa League program has identified the Mother Kathryn Daniels Center Ford, Owens, Winbush, Porter & Wilkerson Residency Tower as the recipient of a funding grant that will not only support the daily operations of the center but also help to further expand its programs and offerings. The dormitory, located in Bishop’s Creek, helps to nurture positive attitudes toward college and campus living in youth ages 12-17 from adverse and at risk backgrounds. Additionally, the Milwaukee Alumni Chapter will be sponsoring a toiletries drive. Members of the North Central Province and Milwaukee community are encouraged to donate unused personal care items including soap, towels, deodorant, toothpaste, and toothbrushes for the benefit of residents of the dormitory.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Iota Psi Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Brown Deer, Wisconsin will promote the Sorority’s national HIV/AIDS awareness initiative, A34Life Campaign (Thursday, March 14th) at the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin.
The campaign is aimed at combating HIV in communities at risk; free testing will be provided at the center. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will also host its Project Reassurance Community Health and Wellness Fair (Saturday, March 14th) at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center.
In an effort to showcase the vibrance of the city of Milwaukee and provide intentional and positive events that will impact the Greater Milwaukee community, both organizations are partnering to offer additional social events open to the public including, Indy Comes To Milwaukee Step Off step show & After Party with music by DJ Poizon Ivy (Friday, March 15th), and a Public Meeting at the Delta Center (Friday, March 15th) that will serve as a direct link between members of both organizations in town for the conferences and the city of Milwaukee.
The public meeting will honor organizational dignitaries, city of Milwaukee leaders, highlight both organizations’ national initiatives, as well as acknowledge community partnerships. Concluding the weekend’s festivities will be the Indiana Comedy Jam starring Saturday Night Live alum Finesse Mitchell with music by DJ O (Saturday, March 16th). Mitchell is also a distinguished member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, where in 2011 he performed with the Kings of Comedy Kappa man, Cedric The Entertainer, for the fraternity’s Centennial Conclave.
