DreamBikes gives new life to old bikes

April 17, 2010

DreamBikes – Milwaukee’s newest used bicycle store located at 2021 A N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr., gives old bikes new life. And in the process, it will also be giving teens glimpses into future careers.

Based in Madison, Wis. and created by Trek Bikes in 2008, DreamBikes is a nonprofit, used bicycle store that provides quality bikes at affordable prices to those in need. Along with making bicycles accessible and safe, it gives neighborhood teens opportunities to gain the skills necessary to succeed in the workforce.

Locally, DreamBikes employs teens from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee. To be considered for a position at either location, members had to successfully complete Clubs’ Career Launch Program. Open to Club members ages 13 to 18, Career Launch helps teens develop the skills essential to advance in the workforce as well help them find a career that fits their interest and talents.

After being hired, teens receive ongoing training from Professional Bike Techs and Business Managers that ranged from learning how to clean and tune up donated bikes to operating retail computer systems.
