Online Sustainable Management Master’s Degree prepares professionals to address universal business challenges of profit versus environmental impact

December 21, 2012

The University of Wisconsin–Extension has developed a new Master of Science in Sustainable Management, answering student demand for business strategies that are profitable, improve local communities, and protect the environment. The degree was developed in collaboration with five University of Wisconsin System campuses as well as corporate partners.

“Since the Sustainable Management bachelor’s program was created in 2009, students have lobbied for a master’s degree option. They recognize, as do employers, that there is a critical need for experts who can lead sustainable business practices,” said UW-Extension Dean David Schejbal. “In this economy, a company’s long-term growth is dependent on the ability to balance the triple bottom line of profitability, people, and planet. Our master’s graduates will be uniquely qualified to face this challenge.”

The degree is ideal for adult professionals who want to improve their career opportunities, whether in a new or existing position. “I have been able to apply what I’ve learned in the Sustainable Management program to my work in the automotive industry. This degree has empowered me to develop new ways of looking at my company’s impact on the community and environment,” said UW-Superior student Daniel Vores.

Taught solely online, the program makes it easy for students to meet their educational goals while balancing other responsibilities. “The online Sustainable Management degree has been ideal, allowing me to continue my education while working and raising a family,” said UW Sustainable Management student Keith Riley.

Five University of Wisconsin System campuses contributed to the master’s degree curriculum, including UW-Green Bay, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Parkside, UW-Stout and UW-Superior.

The program consists of 10 online courses and integrates science, management, and sustainability topics so that students may address such concerns as climate change, resource management, and industrial ecology.

A Capstone experience in the final semester gives students an opportunity to bring their knowledge to real-world sustainability challenges as they develop a program for a local organization.

Enrollment for the Spring 2013 semester is underway. More information on this program can found online at sustain.wisconsin.edu or by phone at 877-UW-LEARN (877-895-3276).
