Recently, Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI-4) along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced nearly $100,000 in grant funding to Growing Power, Inc. to help increase local food access in eligible schools.
Growing Power, Inc. was awarded $99,868 in connection with Farm to School, a USDA supported program aimed at improving agricultural and nutritional education by providing locally-sourced food in schools. Through this grant funding, Growing Power, Inc. will be better equipped to provide training on how to produce fresh locally grown foods.
“Over 80 percent of Milwaukee Public School children are categorized as low-income and, as a result, may not have access to healthy food options,” said Rep. Moore. “The health of our children must always remain a top priority.
Growing Power, Inc. is doing their part to help ensure that Milwaukee children are not only consuming healthy food but also learning how to maintain a healthy food lifestyle.”
Farm to School is one component of USDA’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative, launched in 2009 to coordinate the Department’s work on local and regional food systems and create new opportunities for farmers, ranchers, consumers and rural communities.
