“Educating the Children of Milwaukee: Our Common Mission” is the theme of the 11th Annual Brother Booker Ashe Urban Ministry Program being held Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 7-9 p.m. at Cardinal Stritch University.
A panel discussion will focus on how to achieve quality education for the children of Milwaukee. Three panelists with rich and diverse experiences in the field of education will share their wisdom, skills and passion for educating young people:
- Dr. Howard Fuller, executive director of the Institute for the Transformation of Learning, Marquette University
- Maurice Thomas, director of Teach America
- Rita Tenorio, Administrator of la Escuela Fratney, Milwaukee Public Schools
Moderated by Dr. Corey Thompson, assistant professor and chair of urban education in Stritch’s College of Education and Leadership, the panelists will offer suggestions how to work collaboratively to bridge the education gap in Milwaukee, as well as address the challenges involved and the importance education plays in our community’s future.
Dr. Freda Russell, dean of Stritch’s College of Education and Leadership, said that quality instruction from well prepared teachers is perhaps the most critical element in the future of education in Milwaukee.
“Overall, we want to develop educators who are competent in cross-cultural environments and who understand the changing national and international demographics of the family,” she said. “The twenty-first century learner must understand how global awareness, financial literacy, civic literacy, and health literacy directly impacts the community, as well as the individual’s quality of life.”
The program, which will take place in the Sister Camille Kliebhan Conference Center, is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is appreciated.
