The community is invited to Lisbon Avenue Neighborhood Development’s (LAND) free resource fair on Sat., Aug. 6th from 11:00 to 3:00 p.m. at Washington Park Band Shell.
LAND is hosting LANDFARE 2011: Building Milwaukee Through Community Resources as part of their 15th year appreciation celebration. The event is free and open to the public.
Families and supporters can enjoy free food, fun, entertainment, activities and community resource information.
Invited agencies and guests included: UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University, MATC, Westside Healthcare Center , Milwaukee Sheriff Department, Milwaukee Fire Department, Milwaukee Police 3rd District, The Wisconsin Wizards, United Methodist Children Services, The Salvation Army, Mayor Tom Barrett, Common Council President Willie Hines, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, State Representative Tamara Grigsby, and Dr. Joan Prince.
LAND was first conceived in 1988, when a group of neighborhood residents and area churches joined together to address some of the problems of the neighborhood around Lisbon Avenue and 35th Street. LANDFARE 2011 celebrates the neighbors and neighborhood successes and the future of the Lisbon Avenue Neighborhood Development community.
LAND’s Current Programs & Services:
- HomeSource Center – A home supply warehouse that solicits donations (with our 501c3 status) of new and used limited items (in good condition) then distributes them to low-to-moderate-income residents for a saving of 50-90%.
- LAND’S Prepared Readiness – Is for executive directors, pastors, and small businesses in the neighborhood. The purpose of our Prepared Readiness Initiative is to raise awareness of the community’s lack of preparedness and to create connectivity among organizations in the community. ;
- Community Organizing – LAND and residents assist each other in forming block clubs, clean-ups, and work tenaciously to identify resident concerns for safety and community involvement; and seek resolution to problems associated with crime, dilapidated housing, and sanitation.
- Landlord/Tenant Compact – Trains and encourages volunteer residents to network and work on community is sues, such as neighborhood concerns, neighborhood vision and the next steps.
- Service Learning Partnerships- LAND currently collaborates with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee , and Marquette University . These partnerships provide students the opportunities to engage in community practicum’s in which they receive handson- life- experiences working in a nonprofit organization, providing services to our community. The Service Learning Project with Milwaukee Public Schools provides students the opportunity to learn about their environment, agriculture, recycling, government, laws; the importance of providing services to their community; exposure to life altering experiences; and many other resources.
- LAND Safe Alternative Youth Project – Provides services to youth ages 10 to 17. LAND has decided to provide an Environmental & Community Education Project that will include: workshops, field trips, and the creation of a garden on the vacant lot between 36th and 37th and Lisbon.
