The Milwaukee Public Library (MPL) encourages all children ages 12 and younger to Be A Super Reader this summer. Children can achieve Super Reader status and earn prizes by reading themselves, reading to someone else, or having someone read to them throughout the summer.
New in 2011: Children have a new mission this summer – Defeat Dr. Brain Drain! Dr. Brain Drain is the villain that all Super Readers must fight, because when kids don’t read over the summer, Dr. Brain Drain wins, and HE becomes the smartest of all. But when children read all summer long and attend fun and educational activities at their neighborhood library, Dr. Brain Drain is defeated by an army of Super Readers! Families – get in on the fun. MPL has scheduled many FREE, family-friendly activities and programs during the evening and on weekends for all to enjoy.
“The Milwaukee Public Library is the place this summer for the three Es – education, enlightenment, and entertainment,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. “Now more than ever, I encourage kids, parents and families to visit a Milwaukee Public Library. Get a free library card and check out books, DVDs and CDs, use the computers, and attend any number of inspiring classes, story times, and special events. Become a Super Reader and defeat Dr. Brain Drain by making your library a regular destination this summer.”
“The Milwaukee Public Library is happy to present the Super Reader program again this summer,” said Library Director Paula Kiely. “And Mayor Barrett is right – we encourage and welcome children and families to join us every day this summer to help keep those reading skills in top shape for the next school year. Ask any library staff member to help you become a Super Reader!”
Becoming a Super Reader is simple. Children can sign up at any Milwaukee Public Library. They will receive a Super Reader folder to track minutes they read or when someone reads to them. Kids also receive a coupon for a FREE mini sub coupon from Cousins Subs just for signing up.
There are four levels for children to strive for in the Super Reader program. For each level children complete they earn prizes they can collect at any MPL location. Prizes include a Super Reader backpack, a plush toy dog, a Super Reader yard sign, coupons for a FREE personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut and apple fries from Burger King. Kids can also earn coupons for FREE admission to fun places around town.
Grand prizes include an onfield recognition ceremony at a Milwaukee Brewers game, a Bucks VIP package, a behind- the-scenes tour at the Milwaukee County Zoo, and other ticket and membership packages for the entire family.
Super Readers are invited to attend the hundreds of FREE programs at all Milwaukee Public Libraries. They’ll hear fabulous stories, pet live animals, be entertained by magicians, create art, play musical instruments, and have fun all summer long.
Teens ages 13 to 18 have their own summer reading program called Read Stuff – Win Stuff! @ Your Milwaukee Public Library. Teens also receive a FREE coupon from Cousins Subs when they sign up for the program. When teens read at least three (3) books this summer, they will receive a pair of ear buds for use with mobile music devices or library computers. Read six (6) books and earn a prize pack including an MPL drawstring backpack. Teens who read 10 or more books before July 30 qualify for a grand prize drawing for a $25 Target gift card. All 13 MPL locations will have two (2) Target gift card winners. Finally, as an added bonus, six readers who log 10 books or more before July 30 will be randomly selected to receive a “starter” scholarship sponsored by the EdVest College Savings Programs.
