For the 2010-11 school year, MPS offers free tutoring options through a program called Supplemental Education Services (SES). SES is available to low-income students who perform below the proficient level in math, reading or science and who also attend one of the schools listed here. Generally those who receive free or reducedprice lunch are eligible for SES. The program, provided by the Federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), includes tutoring outside the regular school day.

Nineteen private companies provide the tutoring for children who are in kindergarten through grade 12. Tutoring is also available for students in Special Education or who are English Language Learners. The tutoring services are provided at a place and time that works best for each student. The tutoring is available at the school, in the community, in the child’s home, or online. Priority enrollment goes to the lowest achieving students. Providers offer tutoring by trained instructors. The instructors work with parents to design an Individual Student Achievement Plan (ISAP). During the course of the tutoring, MPS monitors providers and documents the process in an effort to track progress of the student.

“This is a great option for families,” said SES Program Coordinator Sandra Schroeder. “We hope parents take advantage of this free tutoring service. It will help children keep up, catch up and get ahead.” Schroeder said SES helps build children’s academic confidence for longterm success in school.

MPS ensures that SES providers in the district are reputable. SES providers must pass federal and state background checks. The background check is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Justice, and is mandatory for each SES employee.

Qualified families only need to call the SES Office to get more information about the tutoring providers. Enrollment forms are available at all participating MPS schools or by calling (414) 475-8238.

Take advantage of this great opportunity for free tutoring services to boost your son or daughter’s academic achievement – call today. There are still seats available.

Deadline for spring registration is February 18th, 2011.
