Eugene Emmanuel Nelson Jr
With so many negative stories of African American males in Milwaukee, Eugene Emmanuel Nelson Jr, a 45 year old African American male, truly has a remarkable story of positivity and beating all odds. At age 42, Eugene returned back to school after a lengthy incarceration. He set out to prove that second chances are deserving.
Because of his drive to succeed, proven abilities, and impressive academic achievements, Eugene graduated last Sunday, December 19 from UW-Milwaukee with a degree in Sociology and a minor in History. Additionally, he has a list of accolades to his honor including making the Dean’s list on several occasions, being a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society, and being awarded the Gold Cord at UWM’s Commencement Honors Ceremony.
His accomplishments were also noted outside of UWM when he was awarded the 2010 Congressional Black Caucus Scholarship representing Congresswoman Gwen Moore’s district. This prestigious award is given to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary academic performance and have contributed greatly to the community. Eugene is leading by example. He is getting an education to further his dreams but also to be a light to the community. He believes, “It is important for people to see my accomplishments in order for them to have faith and hope in the possibility of fulfilling their own dreams.”
Eugene has been accepted into Graduate School @ UWM and will be pursuing his Master of Science in Cultural Foundations of Education starting this Spring 2011.
Despite hardships and past circumstances, Eugene has shown that one can still achieve his goals. This is a message and a success story that should inspire all young people to want to do better.
