Youth tour colleges

May 6, 2010

Youth on SDCYFDP Spring College Tour enjoy visit to Middle Tennessee State University.

More than a dozen youth from the Social Development Commission’s Youth and Family Development Program (YFDP) have gotten a first-hand look at higher education.

Thirteen youth from the SDC program recently toured five university campuses in Indiana and Tennessee. The schools visited included the University of Indianapolis, Spaulding, Middle Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Tennessee State. Staff accompanying the youth on the 2010 College Tour noted that the students gained a lot of valuable information on higher education including, for example, how one school offers a program that allows enrolled students to graduate debt-free.

Young people who participated in the exploration of colleges were excited about what they saw and learned. One student noted she had found through the tour a school that she really liked and intended to apply to. Quonisha Watts, another YFDP student, stated “I really enjoyed visiting classes and learning about their academic programs…. It has opened my eyes to different opportunities.”

The SDC campus tour is an annual event that helps high school age youth learn more about colleges and encourages them to map out their future education plans. Past tours have helped youth decide where to go to college as well as provide helpful information on the application process and ways of to fund their higher education.
