Time Warner Cable challenges students to ‘Crack the Codes in the Digital World’ by teaching the science of television

April 2, 2010

Students from the Hillside Boys & Girls Club participated in last week’s Time Warner Cable ‘Connect a Million Minds’ Initiative. Students learned and interacted with Time Warner employees. The hands-on, discovery-based program for middle school students takes them out of the classroom they are shown how the company uses science and math in their daily operations.. The initiative is part of the cable company’s $100 million philanthropic effort to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. Time Warner Cable (TWC) launched its newly created signature technology curriculum, Cracking the Codes in the Digital World™, for middle school students in after school settings. Showcasing the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) behind cable television, the curriculum is based on national science standards and will engage TWC employees as mentors and role models.

Cracking the Codes in the Digital World launched during the company’s national designated Connect a Million Minds® Week, March 22- 27, 2010. In Wisconsin, students visited Time Warner Cable facilities in Milwaukee and Appleton in order to unlock the mystery of energy conversion, learn and experience geosynchronous orbit and discover the math and science behind delivering digital content into the home and onto the television.

Participants in Cracking the Codes in the Digital World took part in several hands-on experiments that illustrate how a digital signal is created and transmitted, and the ways that people receive and request information and entertainment throughout the Time Warner Cable system. It aligns with the company’s mission to connect people and businesses with information, entertainment and each other in ways that are simple and easy.
