The Salvation Army is off to a record start serving nearly 3,000 more lunches during Feed the Kids program than last year.
Feed the Kids, now in its 23rd year, is the only mobile program that provides lunch each weekday throughout the city of Milwaukee. The program runs for 10 weeks; June 19-August 24.
The program served 9,627 lunches in its first week compared to 6,791 during its first week last year.
“The Feed the Kids program is a major contributor in continuing nutritional care throughout the summer and meeting the hunger needs of children in the Greater Milwaukee area. The economy continues to impact many families’ ability to meet basic needs, even food; 40 percent of children in Milwaukee are living in poverty. If the first week is any indicator of the next nine weeks we are on target to provide 30,000 more lunches this year than last year. We will meet that need,” said Major Roger Ross, Salvation Army Milwaukee County Commander.
In 2011 the Feed the Kids program served a grand total of 95,846 lunches to area children.
The Salvation Army operates the Feed the Kids program in collaboration with Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee Public School District, West Allis/West Milwaukee School District, Milwaukee Center for Independence, Boys & Girls Clubs, Social Development Commission and HeartLove Place.
