31st Annual Milwaukee LGBT Film & Video Festival

October 15, 2016

milwaukee-pride-logoMilwaukee Pride is honored to present Kiki, the award-winning documentary.

Revisiting the scene documented in the landmark 1990 film Paris is Burning, Sara Jordenö & Twiggy Pucci Garçon’s film unfurls a series of portraits of LGBTQ youth-of-color as they find inspiration and agency in the balls of Kiki scene, an artistic and activist collective legendary for its dance and performance.

These young queer people contend with homelessness, illness, and prejudice as they assert expressions of identity and fight for social justice.

Among its prizes, Kiki won the Teddy Award for Best LGBT Documentary at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival and Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award for Human Rights at this year’s Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.

The film has been described as “joyous and genuinely inspiring,” “wonderfully alive and emotional” and “ultimately uplifting… but doesn’t patronize or placate.”  Simply put, Kiki is not to be missed!

Kiki screens Sunday, October 16 at 1:00 P.M at the UWM Union Cinema.

Festival continues through October 23

The full festival schedule, which includes several free showings, is now available online.

Don’t miss a stunning series of Men’s Shorts, Trans Shorts,  Women’s Shorts and Community Shorts throughout the festival!

Advance tickets are available at the UWM Union Cinema box office or at Outwords Books.  Support the festival’s future — and see all of this year’s films — for just $100!

Milwaukee Pride is proud to continue our long-standing sponsorship and support of this cinematic journey, which celebrates the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals throughout our shared history.  We thank our Proud Partner, the Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival for being a community advocate for our organization.
