Free puppet show at the Domes focuses on Lead-Poisoning Prevention

October 18, 2013

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week Oct 20-26

Lead-poisoning prevention is the message of a free puppet show being presented by the Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers (SSCHC) Lead Outreach Program, Monday, Oct 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the Mitchell Park Domes.

The puppet show is part of a “free admission morning” for Milwaukee County Residents.

The Domes, Milwaukee’s Living Landmark, is located at 524 S. Layton Blvd.

While being entertained by the 20-minute puppet show, children and their caregivers will learn how to reduce exposure to lead, as the SSCHC promotes “Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future,” the theme of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

“The theme underscores the importance of testing your home, testing your children, and learning how to prevent serious health effects associated with lead poisoning,” said Dalila Cardona, Lead Program Manager at SSCHC.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, 24 million homes in the U.S. have peeling or chipping lead-based paint and high levels of lead-contaminated house dust.

Other lead-contaminated sources include soil, small toys, imported metal pots, and water pipes in homes.

The SSCHC’s lead outreach services aim to improve community understanding of the threat posed by deteriorating lead-based paint and to provide regular follow-up care for children who have been poisoned by lead.

While at The Domes, visitors are encouraged to tour the current floral show, “Fall into the Fifties,” featuring a multi-colored array of chrysanthemums.

All Milwaukee County Residents, with proof of residency, receive free admission Monday morning, 9 a.m.-noon.

People residing outside of Milwaukee County pay the following admission rates: Adults, $6.50; Youth, age 6-17, $5.00; Children, age 5 & under, free; College Students with school ID, $5.00; and Friends of The Domes member, Free.
