A program that helps the homebound remain in their own homes is looking for volunteer seniors. The Senior Companion Program of the Social Development Commission (SDC) is seeking seniors to become part of the program that helps Milwaukee County homebound. To become a Senior Companion, you must be at least 55 years old, unemployed or retired, and interested in helping people.
Companions receive training and make regular visits to the elderly neighbors to whom they are assigned and help by being an escort on walks, shopping trips and medical appointments.
Volunteers in the program receive a tax-free stipend that does not impact other benefits they may be receiving.
