Volunteers who will provide free preparation of state and federal tax forms in the upcoming season are busy getting ready.
Training is being held for the preparers who do taxes for the Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition’s (MABC) annual free tax service. Volunteers undergo classroom and hands-on computer training as part of their IRS certification before they begin preparing.
The training included a presentation by Mike Hineberg of IndependenceFirst on disability awareness training. He described a number of disabilities that can impact the tax filing process. He also provided several suggestions on how the tax preparers can more effectively provide services to a tax filer who has a disability.
This is the 12th year for the program which has helped file more than 117,000 tax forms at no charge, returning more than $132-million in tax refunds and credits.
The program will start doing the taxes in mid-January.
