Milwaukee’s annual United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Walk/Run for Education has become an anticipated family-oriented 5K (3.1 miles) walk and certified run.
The Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, July 21, 2012. The warm up program starts at 8:00 a.m. and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. on 2nd and Michigan. This fundraising event was formed to raise funds for UNCF students in the forms of scholarships and services.
Students receiving funds from UNCF attend over 900 colleges and universities here and across the nation. UNCF also supports 38 historically Black colleges and universities.
Corporate teams, fraternities, sororities, community organizations, churches, and individuals, who participate realize that “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste”® and understand the importance of “giving back.”
Many participants are proud alumni of historically Black colleges and universities; they look forward each year to this measurably tangible activity that supports the institutions which have given many their start in life.
This year’s Honorary Chairman is Mayor Tom Barrett. The Grand Marshalls are Brad Chapin, BMO Harris Bank and Grand Master, Charles Currie, MW Prince Hall Grand Lodge. The Chairpersons are Carole McKinney-Rice, Columbia Savings & Loan, Deborah Moore, City Hall; Albert Thomas, GE Healthcare. A host of volunteers are joining this leadership making this event a great success.
The race ends at Veteran’s Park on the lakefront where food, fun and entertainment takes place. A reunion atmosphere prevails as many have no seen each other since the last Walk/Run. On the grounds is a mini health fair, while the children enjoy activities designed specifically for them.
Entertainment will come from center stage and of course everyone will be eagerly awaiting the center stage announcement for the runners and participating groups. Join us! Walk, run, donate, and volunteer with a purpose.
