Library Director Paula Kiely and the Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustees will hold a public meeting to update the community on the plans for the redevelopment of the East Library property on Wednesday, February 8 from 6-7 p.m. at the East Library.
MPL’s East Library is located at 1910 E. North Avenue. This one-story, 13,800 square foot building opened for business in 1968 and still has the original interior design, lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling systems 43 years later. In 2010, more than 140,000 people visited East Library to use 18 public computers, check out books, DVDs, CDs, and use the community meeting room.
The Milwaukee Public Library Board of Trustee’s Building and Development Committee selected HSI Development to redevelop the East Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library in November 2011. After HSI completes the process to secure a HUD loan guarantee this year, preparations for construction of the new building will begin in early 2013. During 2013, the current East Library will be closed and a temporary location will open until the new building is ready for occupancy. A tentative opening is scheduled for the fall of 2014.
