Responding to a changing landscape

October 28, 2011

Organizations and programs that serve the Milwaukee area community are faced with shrinking traditional funding sources in a time when need for their services is on the rise. Poverty reducing agencies and programs need to determine how to effectively continue their work in this changing funding landscape.

The 5th Annual Symposium on Poverty is being organized by the Social Development Commission (SDC) to examine and discuss practical solutions and best practices in addressing this problem. The daylong event will be held Wednesday, November 9 at the Italian Conference Center between 7 am and 3:30 pm. The day is free and open to the public.

A series of workshops, discussions and roundtables will be held on a range of topics including partnerships between businesses and nonprofits, collaboration strategies, how nonprofits can benefit from some business practices, the future of foundations in Wisconsin, how nonprofits can best approach corporations and foundations, corporate social responsibility, how nonprofits can use a for-profit arm, and tools nonprofits can employ to lower costs and increase outcomes.

Keynote speakers will be Dr. Gregory Thornton of Milwaukee Public Schools and Secretary Eloise Anderson of the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families. Space is limited and preregistration is encouraged for organizations or individuals interested in participating.

For more information or to register, visit the SDC website at www.cr-sdc.org and click on the link for the Symposium on Poverty.
