Annual Freedom Essay Scholarship Contest deadline extended

August 25, 2011

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs’ 4th Annual Freedom Scholarship Essay Contest for 2011 has extended its deadline. The contest challenges students to put into words what the concept of “freedom” means to them and how they can combat and prevent prejudice, discrimination, and violence in our world today.

The extended deadline for the scholarship is Monday, September 19, 2011.

Alderwoman Coggs said it is important to give young people the opportunity to express their reflections about freedom in a way that can benefit themselves and society. “Giving our young people a voice through the scholarship essay contest is one small way of reaffirming our belief in them as they strive to become the productive adults and leaders in Milwaukee ,” she said.

Two scholarships will be awarded and excerpts from winning essays may be published, Alderwoman Coggs said.

For more details, contact Akuwa Dantzler at 286-8640. Applications are available online at www.city.milwaukee.gov/district6 – and must be returned and postmarked by the new deadline, September 19, 2011.
