Disturbing reports of disorder

July 9, 2011

Statement of Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs and Alderman Nik Kovac

We are very concerned about the ransacking of the BP station at Humboldt and North, and the reported violent armed robberies and assaults that witnesses say occurred in Kilbourn Reservoir Park very late on Sunday and early Monday morning. We have each been in touch with the Milwaukee Police Department, and we would like to reassure all of the victims, witnesses, and neighbors that the police are taking the series of alleged incidents very seriously, and we expect that their investigations will produce results.

As the alderpersons representing the area of the park and its surrounding blocks, we will be closely monitoring the results of this investigation and making sure that all relevant information is shared with the public in a timely and appropriate manner.

Anyone with relevant information to share with MPD should call 414-935-7360.

In Riverwest – and across Milwaukee – residents and visitors enjoy our public spaces every day, and it is in our beautiful parks and on summer holidays, especially, that we look forward to peaceable moments of celebration with friends and family. Reservoir Park is a wonderful vista and green space, and it is a particularly ideal perch from which to honor our country’s history while watching displays of fireworks.

Therefore, it was very disheartening for us to learn about reported incidents of senseless violence in this unique and peaceful public place.

We are hopeful that neighbors and witnesses working with the police will help provide information that can bring justice in this case and, perhaps, help bring changes that can prevent these incidents from happening again.
