African World Festival excited to return R & B star Charlie Wilson and welcome jazz great Norman Brown

July 2, 2011

Supporters of African World Festival have been eagerly awaiting the 2011 festival entertainment lineup. With their successful return last year, the board of directors sought to program a day that offered something for everyone. “In looking at our entertainment options, we wanted an artist who could appeal across generational lines and frankly, nobody does that better than Charlie Wilson”, said board chair Mark Wade. Wilson’s hit “You Are” is coming off a 13 week ride at #1 on Billboard’s Urban Adult Contemporary Chart.

In addition to the R&B Mega Star, festivalgoers will be treated to a Jazz explosion that includes Norman Brown, Marion Meadows, Walter Beasley, and Roy Ayers. Looking to draw another base of support, African World Festival has added a full Blues stage this year. “The community asked for it and we delivered” declared Michelle Bryant, festival executive director. Blues enthusiasts can expect to see Clarence Carter, OB Buchana, Ms. Jody, and Floyd Taylor, son of the legendary Johnny Taylor.

Rounding out the schedule is Grammy Award winning Fred Hammond, sponsored in partnership with the American Heart Association’s/Power to End Stroke Most Powerful Voices Gospel Tour.

The festival is Saturday, August 6, 2011, at Maier Festival Park. Tickets, $12 in advance and $17 at the gate, go on sale on Friday, July 1st. For more information call 414-291-7959.
