BloodCenter of Wisconsin promotes National Donate Life Month with call to Share Life

April 2, 2011

BloodCenter of Wisconsin is sponsoring a variety of events and activities to promote National Donate Life Month in April and spread the call to Share Life.

“It is a month to both remember and strive. We recognize the enormous generosity of the people who help save lives and improve the quality of life for patients through their precious gifts of organs, tissue, eye, blood and marrow donation. In recognition of Donate Life Month, we invite and encourage Wisconsinites to make the decision to share life,” said Jackie Fredrick, president and CEO of BloodCenter of Wisconsin.

Events at hospitals throughout Wisconsin will celebrate people who have shared life or have been touched by others who have. BloodCenter is also launching a social media campaign to provide volunteer and donor families in sharing their stories online. Visit www.bcw.edu/sharinglife to learn more.

Over 110,000 people in the United States and 1,800 people in Wisconsin are awaiting a life-saving organ transplant. Every year, more than 35,000 children and adults need marrow transplants and blood cell transplants to survive. One tissue donor can enhance the lives of more than 50 recipients. And here in Wisconsin, we need 800 blood donors each day to maintain our blood supply.

National Donate Life Month is a time to promote organ, tissue, eye, blood and bone marrow donation awareness. Health care providers and community service organizations are encouraged to lead the campaign by using easy tools provided by BloodCenter at www.bcw.edu/sharinglife.

Wisconsin residents in turn are encouraged to share life by donating blood, joining the Be the Match Marrow Donor Registry and registering to become an organ, tissue and eye donor.
