CYD honors Reuben Harpole and Vel Phillips for decades of community service

November 13, 2010

Attorney Michael F. Hupy, Partner in the law firm of Hupy & Abraham, S.C., Charles Walton, Chief Executive Officer Career Youth Development and Pastor Karen Bailey, Founder of The Song of Life Baptist Church

CYD (Career Youth Development) held their 40th Annual Image Awards Friday, October 22, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Milwaukee. The theme of the celebration was “To God Be The Glory”, dedicated to the beloved memories of the two original CYD founders: The late Claretta “Mother Freedom” Simpson and Commissioner Jeannetta Simpson Robinson.

Mr. Reuben Harpole was honored as “Man of the Year” for 50 years of outstanding community service, celebrating his tireless efforts of bringing people together and finding resources for those in need. The Honorable Vel Phillips was honored as “Woman of the Year” for her courageous activity in the women’s movement and the civil rights movement. Attorney Michael F. Hupy and the law firm of Hupy and Abraham, S.C. was presented three awards for “Excellence in Community Service, Love of Youth and Practicing Love in Action”

U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Moore offered words of inspiration to the crowd of hundreds and program acknowledgements were given to our national, state, county and city public officials and dignitaries including our new Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Gregory E. Thornton, Ed.D. and the MPS Board.

Attorney Michael F. Hupy and the law firm has been involved in the community for decades upholding the law firm’s mission statement of supporting programs that promote education, safety and the elimination of hunger. The firm’s community involvement dates back to the late Attorney Lloyd Barbee who initiated the law suit that ended segregation in the Milwaukee Public School system. “We are proud to receive these awards. It’s nice to know our efforts are appreciated and it encourages us to work more diligently at supporting our youth in the community”, said Attorney Hupy.
