Summer Sizzle

Summer Sizzle, the Historic Third Ward Jazz Festival takes place on Sat., Aug 7 from 11 a.n. to 11 p.m. The annual festival is back after a hiatus last year, bringing a day of free live jazz along North Broadway.

Chicago saxophonist Ray Silkman headlines with a 9 p.m. set on the Main Stageone of four stanges featuring local and regional musicians playing every variety of jazz: smooth, swing, Dixieland, Latin and traditional. Some of the acts also performing on the Main Stage Include:

11am-1pm
Typhanie Monique

Soulful, honey-voiced chanteuse is a tour de force on Chicago music scene, “a modern-day Sarah Vaughan” (Jazz Times). With guitarist Neal Alger.

1:30-3:30pm
Manty Ellis

Impeccable bebop, playing lyrical guitar with distinctive edge, Ellis is cornerstone of the city’s jazz community

4-6pm
Berkeley Fudge

Godfather of Milwaukee jazz, virtuoso saxman Fudge is “old school” and has appeared with artists like Sonny Stitt and the late Lena Horne.

6:30-8:30pm
Don Lewis Quintet

Seasoned trumpet master, Lewis plays straight-ahead jazz, sometimes with blues twist or sprinkle of swing.

Ray Silkman closes the evening with his set for the Main Stage, “You can feel his music,” the great Benny Carter said about saxophonist Silkman — back by popular demand! Silkman’s energy and passion flow from the depths of his soul, mesmerizing listeners with superb talent and dazzling artistry.

The day long event also offers dozens of vendors who will offer everything from fair trade gifts and handcrafted drums to jewelry, clothing and home decor.
