Milwaukee, June 10, 2010 – State Representative Jason Fields joined the Agape Community Center staff and volunteers on Wednesday, June 9th to help serve a hot nutritious meal to more than 85 children, families, and residents of the Thurston Woods neighborhood.
Agape Community Center is located on Milwaukee’s northwest side and was founded by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. The Center’s Community Meal Program has been providing meals to Milwaukee’s northwest side residents since 1986. Additionally, the Center offers a number of educational; recreational; cultural; and supportive service programs along with a summer urban day camp for children and a free medical clinic.
“The mission of the Center is to serve and build community so everyone can thrive”, said Agape Development Director, Al Luzi. “We are fortunate to have a legislative leader like Jason who has always been willing to reach out to our urban neighborhood without hesitation to actually provide an essential service to residents by being part of the meal program”, Luzi added. Ann Bachrach, Agape Executive Director, noted “Jason understands that serving the community means both in Madison and in the district as a volunteer, he truly is a person for others.”
Along with serving food Representative Fields distributed dictionaries to children and families in attendance and provided books for block club organizers to disseminate throughout the neighborhood. The dictionaries were donated by the AT&T Pioneers whom along with company representatives also participated in the meal and book distribution. “We are thankful for the support of Representative Fields; AT&T for contributing the dictionaries; our meal providers; and volunteers that it is possible for the Center to feed community residents 3 nights per week, 52 weeks a year, “ Luzi said.
