Dr. King Day Justice Rally and March to King’s statue

January 15, 2010

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Justice Rally and March will be held on Monday, Jan. 18-the national holiday at 1 pm at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 1927 N. 4th St.

A one hour commemorative program will be followed by a 4 block march to Dr. King’s statue on M.L. King Drive, just north of Walnut St., where thee will be an open mike to reflect on Dr. King’s work.

The event will focus on the message of Dr. King toward the end of his life when he strongly confronted not only racism, but consumerism, poverty and militarism. Milwaukee civil rights activist Ruth Zubrensky will be honored. She was a personal friend of Coretta Scott King and is the author of a book documenting the civil rights movement in Milwaukee.

The event is sponsored by the Milwaukee Justice Coalition and St. Francis Church. The Milwaukee Justice Coalition has come together annually for this event for the past 8 years and includes grassroots groups working on issues of poverty, homelessness, economic justice and peace. (Peace Action WI, Repairers of the Breach, Casa Maria Catholic Worker, Veterans for Peace, Vets Place Central, Welfare Warriors, Greater Milwaukee Green Party).
