Major Robert Thomson, Salvation Army Divisional Commander for Wisconsin & Upper Michigan, will give the invocation at the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration. Salvation Army volunteers will also be on hand serving free hot chocolate to guests. The event will be held on Sunday, January 16th, 2011 at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 929 N. Water St. , from Noon until 4:00 p.m. The public is invited.
Milwaukee’s Dr. King community celebration is only one of two nationally, along with Atlanta that is still held on an annual basis. Performing arts festivities include local arts groups representing many cultures. More than 300 artists will be performing at this year’s annual celebration. The event will also include winners of the student speech and writing contests.
“The Salvation Army is happy to be part of an event that celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”, said Major Thomson.
Dr. King once said, “Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t even have to make your subject and your verb, agree to serve…you only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
“Dr. King was a man who believed in service to others, a man full of peace and love, a man I know would support our mission of meeting human need without discrimination through the love of Jesus Christ,” said Major Thomson.
