Experience and dedication key to campaign
Senator Spencer Coggs
Senator Spencer Coggs announced this week that he is officially a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin in 2010.
“After speaking with many people around the state, and in consultation with my friends, family, and my exploratory committee, I have received nothing but positive feedback, and I’ve been encouraged to run. My 26 year tenure in the State Legislature and my contacts statewide would bring forth a wealth of experience to the office of the Lieutenant Governor,” said Sen. Coggs.
First elected to the State Assembly in 1982, Sen. Coggs served for 20 years in the House before being elected to the State Senate in 2003. Prior to his election, he worked as a health inspector for the City of Milwaukee. In that capacity he became an active union member, eventually being elected to Chief Steward of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 1091. As a State Senator, he has served two terms as president of the National Labor Caucus of State Legislators.
During his career, Sen. Coggs has focused on issues such as health care, education, criminal justice, and small and minority business development. Economic development proposals that have been developed by him have been used as model legislation in other states.
“During my service, in the Legislature I have had the opportunity to work on behalf of working families throughout the state. As Lieutenant Governor, I would be able to continue to work on a jobs agenda from inside the Executive Branch,” said Sen. Coggs.
Sen. Coggs is in the process of setting up his campaign apparatus to begin the 2010 race.
“The experience that I can bring to bread and butter issues in the Lieutenant Governor’s race would be unparalleled by any other candidate. I look forward to a campaign that will highlight the important issues that are facing the citizens of Wisconsin and working collaboratively to solve them,” said Sen. Coggs.
