31,000 County and Municipal employees endorse candidate with experience
Senator Spencer Coggs has received the endorsement of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) Council 40. AFSCME Council 40 represents nearly 31,000 public employees in 71 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties.
“As a state legislator with 27 years of experience and an unimpeachable record of support for issues affecting public employees, I am proud to stand in solidarirty with my Council 40 brothers and sisters as I bring my campaign for Lieutenant Governor to the people of Wisconsin,” said Sen. Coggs.
Sen. Coggs joined AFSCME during his career with the City of Milwaukee, eventually serving as Chief Steward of his local chapter. He has remained an active member of the union. He currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Elections, and Urban Affairs.
Rick Badger, executive director of AFSCME Council 40, said that “Spencer has the experience and labor background that we expect from the next Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin. We know that as Lt. Governor, Spencer will be a strong advocate for the working men and women of Wisconsin.”
Other highlights from Senator Coggs’ legislative career include creating opportunities for minority and women contractors during the building of the Marquette Interchange and Miller Stadium; saving the Isaac Coggs and Martin Luther King Health Centers in Milwaukee, which now serve over 36,000 individuals; getting health benefits for victims of the A.O. Smith and Tower plant closings; beefing up Badgercare for all Wisconsinites; and passing the Asia Jones legislation, which put a stop to deaths occurring in day care vans.
Senator Coggs has also been endorsed by the Wisconsin State Employees Union, Teamsters, Wisconsin Professional Firefighters, Retired Postal Workers, the Operating Engineers, and the American Federation of Teachers-Local 212.
