Milwaukee, WI – MPower Theater Group, Milwaukee’s social justice community theater group is finishing its 1st season with the powerful theatrical event UnTamed: Hair, Body, Attitude-Short Plays by Black Women in collaboration with The New Black Fest and playwright Dominique Morisseau. This compelling production is directed by Catina Cole, local theater activist, at the The Underground Collaborative, 161 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Lower Level, in Milwaukee, WI, July 16, 2016 at 7:00pm.
UnTamed: Hair, Body, Attitude was a response by The New Black Fest in collaboration with playwright Dominique Morisseau commissioned five Black women playwrights to dig deeper and participate in the national conversation around Black womanhood and social perceptions of black femininity, providing black women a creative platform to personalize these issues. Untamed: Hair Body Attitude will feature short plays by Jocelyn Bioh, Chisa Hutchinson, Lenelle Moïse, Nikkole Salter, & Cori Thomas.
“We are seeing the country shift from complacency to action around issues of black lives mattering, and a crucial part of that conversation is black women’s lives. Black womanhood has often been marginalized through perceptions of our Hair, Body and Attitude, and if anything is going to shift in our nation, we have to engage our artists in deconstructing these social prisons. So welcome to the dialogue and get ready to be a participant, because this is beyond a performance or a short play festival, this is the continuation of a movement.” – Dominique Morisseau – playwright.
