The Social Development Commission (SDC) announces participation again in the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) in Milwaukee. Through its Food Service Program, SDC prepares and delivers meals that feed school age children during the summer months. SDC Interim CEO Hannah C. Dugan says “SDC Food Service made more than 68,000 meals last summer that kept children fed and healthy. These were in addition to the more than 1.75-million meals prepared during the year through the regular SDC Food Service Program. We are looking forward to again feeding children through this program who might otherwise go hungry during the summer.”
The Summer Food Service Program sites will bring the total number of locations being served by the SDC Food Service to over 100 located around Milwaukee County.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, provides nutritious meals to children during the summer, when free and reduced-price school meals are unavailable. Free meals will be made available to eligible children 18 years of age and under. Persons over 18 years of age who are determined by a state or local public educational agency to be mentally or physically disabled and who also participate in a public or private non-profit school program during the regular school year may receive free meals as well.
“This program fills a void created when school lunches are not available,” said Earl Guyton, SDC Food Program manager. “Helping parents meet the nutritional needs of their children is the strength of this program.”
Meals are provided to eligible children regardless of race, color, national origin, age, gender or disability and there will be no discrimination in the course of meal service. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights (Office of Adjudication), 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call toll free (866) 632-9992 (Voice). TDD users can contact USDA through local relay or the Federal Relay at (800) 877-8339 (TDD) or (866) 377-8642 (relay voice users). USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer.
