Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has launched the 5th Annual Freedom Scholarship Essay Contest for 2012, challenging students to analyze the concept of “freedom” and – in an essay of 1,000 words or less – (a) analyze why it is so vital that the remembrance, history and lessons of freedom be passed to a new generation; and (b) suggest what they, as students, can do to combat and prevent prejudice, discrimination, and violence in our world today.
The deadline for the scholarship is Monday, August 13, 2012.
Alderwoman Coggs created the contest when she took office as a dedicated investment in opportunities for students in the 6th District. Alderwoman Coggs said it is important to give young people the opportunity to express their reflections about freedom in a way that can benefit themselves and society.
“Giving our young people a voice through the scholarship essay contest is one small way of reaffirming our belief in them as they strive to become the productive adults and leaders in Milwaukee,” she said.
Two scholarships will be awarded and excerpts from winning essays may be published, Alderwoman Coggs said.
Applications are available – online at www.city.milwaukee.gov/district6 – and must be returned and postmarked by August 13, 2012.
