Milwaukee Public Library Calendar of Events November 20-26

Tour the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., with the Friends. Free tours begin at 11 a.m. each Saturday afternoon in the rotunda. Tour goers receive a coupon for a free book at the end of the tour in the Bookseller Store and Café. To arrange for a special tour call (414) 286-TOUR.

EVENTS

Oh Freedom! Sons of the Civil Rights Movement

Award-winning folksinger Chris Vallillo will perform pivotal songs from the music that inspired and sustained the Civil Rights Movement at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave. on Sunday, November 20, 2-3 p.m. Interspersed with the music will be firsthand accounts of the historic struggle and the impact of music on our nation’s most important social cause.

Spotlight Exhibit Series

The Spotlight Exhibit Series will showcase rotating exhibits from the Milwaukee Public Library’s Rarities Collection every month. Stop in to view the reception room and enjoy a self-guided tour of prints, posters, illuminated manuscripts, and other treasures not normally on display to the public at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Tuesday, November 22, 12-7 p.m. in the Richard E. and Lucile Krug Rare Books Room.

Book to Art Club

Engage with popular literature in a hands-on, imaginative way! Read a selected novel then work on an art project inspired by the story at the East Branch, 2320 N. Cramer St., Tuesday, November 22, 6-7 p.m. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Please register online or by calling Ready Reference at 286-3011. Registration will open the day of the previous month’s program.

Chess Club

Bring your chess set and love of strategy to a drop-in chess club at the East Branch, 2320 N. Cramer St., Wednesday, November 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Meet new chess enthusiasts while improving your strategy.

BYOD – Bring Your Own Device

Learn how to set up your iPad, Kindle, Nook or tablet to download free eBooks, audiobooks and magazines available to you as a Milwaukee Public Library card holder. Please bring your Milwaukee Public Library card and all passwords.

Coffee & Coloring

Shake off the mid-week blues with a creative outlet to color and enjoy a cup of coffee at the Villard Square Branch, 5190 N. 35th St., Wednesday, November 23, 12-1:30 p.m. Coloring sheets and supplies provided as well as free coffee while supplies last. Drop in and take a break! Also Nov. 30.

Skeins of Milwaukee

Bring your needles and/or hooks, your yarn and your enthusiasm to share and learn with others who knit and crochet. Join us at the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Saturday, November 26, 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Mozart’s Grove. There is free 2-hr. street parking on Saturdays.

Thanksgiving Pajama Story Time

Celebrate Thanksgiving with a craft and listen to stories about family, food and love at the East Branch, 2320 N. Cramer St., Monday, November 21, 6-7 p.m.

American Indian Legends with Hawk, Owl, Vulture & Eagle

Celebrate Native American Heritage Day as Schlitz Audubon presents the First-Peoples’ storytelling tradition highlighting birds of prey at the Tippecanoe Branch, 3912 S. Howell Ave., Tuesday, November 22, 6-7 p.m.

Elephant and Piggie Goodbye Party

Say “goodbye” and “thank you” to the beloved characters Gerald and Piggie as we celebrate all of the laughter and fun of the Elephant and Piggie book series by Mo Willems.

Cramer St., Monday, November 21, 6:30-7 p.m. Come dressed in your coziest PJs and bring a stuffed animal friend. Also Nov. 28.

Play & Learn

Imaginative play for families with young children at Washington Park Library, 2121 N. Sherman Blvd., Saturday, November 26, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Flower Shop. Practice helping out at the florist’s shop. Help customers, arrange flowers, run the cash register, and write up orders.

Playgroup With Stories

A 20-minute story time for children and their parents or guardian is followed by open play time with a variety of age-appropriate, educational toys.

Cooking with Kids

Interested in cooking? Find out firsthand what cooking is all about at the Atkinson Library, 1960 W. Atkinson Ave., Monday, November 21, 2-3 p.m. Discover kid-friendly recipes, learn about nutrition and try out a bunch of new foods. Also Nov. 22, 23.

Truck Studio Art Workshop

A drop-in program designed for children in Grades K5-5. Participants will work on imaginative art activities relevant to a book or artistic theme for the day.  Presented by Artists Working in Education, Inc. (A.W.E.).

LEGO Club at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Saturday, November 26, 2-3 p.m. We provide the LEGOs and you provide the imagination! Join other LEGO enthusiasts for an afternoon of building. What will you create?

Preschool Story Time

Preschoolers are invited for fun stories, songs, and finger plays designed to help them develop important literacy skills needed prior to learning how to read. Child care centers are welcome.
