Tour the Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., with the Friends. Free tours begin at 11 a.m. each Saturday afternoon in the rotunda. Tour goers receive a coupon for a free book at the end of the tour in the Bookseller Store and Café. To arrange for a special tour call (414) 286-TOUR.

Job Fair Workshop
Learn strategies, tips and tactics to prepare yourself for success at this workshop at Center Street Library, 2727 W. Florentine Opera Company Sister Carrie Book Club
In anticipation of the world premiere of a new American opera, Sister Carrie, join the Florentine Opera
Company in an exploration of the groundbreaking Theodore Dreiser novel of the same name at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Monday, August 22, 6-7 p.m. Sister Carrie follows Carrie Meeber, a young woman from rural Wisconsin on the eve of the 20th century as she migrates to the big city and ultimately becomes a Broadway star. Art Night: Joseph Cornell Shadowboxes
Make your own personal shadowbox diorama at the Tippecanoe Branch, 3912 S. Howell Ave., Monday, August 22, 6-7:30 p.m. Fun and ridiculous materials will be provided or bring your own. Use found objects, personal photographs and unusual 3D materials. Learn about the famous shadowbox “surrealist” Joseph Cornell.
Spotlight Exhibit Series
The Spotlight Exhibit Series will showcase rotating exhibits from the Milwaukee Public Library’s Rarities Collection twice a month at Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Tuesday, August 23, 12-7 p.m. in the Richard E. and Lucile Krug Rare Books Room. Stop in to view the reception room and enjoy a self-guided tour of prints, posters, illuminated manuscripts, and other treasures not normally on display to the public.
Book to Art Club
Engage with popular literature in a hands-on, imaginative way! The Book to Art Club will read a selected novel then work on an art project inspired by the story at the East Branch, 2320 N. The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener Presents: How to Grow Garlic
Garlic is one of the easiest crops to grow in your garden. Let Joey and Holly Baird teach you how to grow the tastiest garlic right outside your back door at the Mill Road Library, 6431 N. 76th St., Saturday, August 27, 2-3 p.m. Joey & Holly Baird are the founders of The Wisconsin Vegetable Gardener who appear on youtube, podcasts and magazines presenting information on how to grow food organically and reuse found items, and offer tips on home canning and simple home living.
The Paradox of Being a Black Police Office in Today’s Society
Presented by Corey Saffold at Capitol Library, 3969 N. 74th St., Saturday, August 27, 2-3 p.m. Officer Corey Saffold is a law enforcement professional in Madison originally from Milwaukee, and is known in the community for his volunteerism and his work with youth of all ages and demographic backgrounds. Officer Saffold will address the paradox of being a Black officer during a time when police are often not trusted, especially among the African-American community. Officer Saffold will offer his strategy for engaging the community at large around issues that have also affected him personally. This event is brought to you by the Wisconsin Humanities Council.
