Mitchell Airport Continues to Reduce Environmental Footprint

June 11, 2016

MKE recognized by Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air for improving air quality

MILWAUKEE –– Milwaukee County’’s General Mitchell International Airport is getting accolades from the Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air for its voluntary efforts to improve air quality.

MKE received a Recognition Award for continuous improvement across airport operations from facility to fleet and its engagement with customers and the community. The award was presented during the Clean Air Extravaganza on May 26.

“Although Mitchell Airport is one of the larger facilities in Milwaukee County government, it is quickly becoming a leader in energy-efficient design and operations,” County Executive Chris Abele said.  “I am proud of Airport Environmental Manager Greg Failey’s efforts and the entire Airport’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint and become an even better steward of our planet’s natural resources.”

MKE earned the award for a variety of initiatives, including electric vehicle charging stations, more fuel-efficient parking shuttles, new LED lighting in the terminal, better monitoring of energy usage, and ongoing HVAC upgrades.  The Airport’s newly-renovated Baggage Claim facility, which includes a green roof, energy-conservation technologies, and automatic lighting controls with occupancy sensors, was also cited as a reason for presenting the award.

The Wisconsin Partners for Clean Air is a coalition of more than 250 businesses, community organizations, schools, and government agencies committed to improving air quality through voluntary action.

Mitchell Airport offers nonstop flights to 37 destinations coast-to-coast, and 160 international destinations are available from Milwaukee with just one connection.  MKE is served by Air Canada, Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier, OneJet, Southwest and United.  The nonstop cities map can be found at www.mitchellairport.com.

General Mitchell International Airport is owned by Milwaukee County and operated by the Department of Transportation, Airport Division, under the policy direction of the Milwaukee County Executive and the County Board of Supervisors. The airport is entirely funded by user fees; no property tax dollars are used for the airport’s capital improvements or for its day-to-day operation.
