Free Taxes, Free Activities at SDC’s Super Saturday

social-development-commission-pathways-from-poverty-to-success-logoMILWAUKEE – The filing deadline for taxes is Monday, April 18. Milwaukee County residents that earned a household income of $56,000 or less in 2015 are eligible to have their state and federal taxes prepared and filed at no cost by the Social Development Commission (SDC) as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Super Saturday, hosted by the SDC is Saturday, April 9 from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM at SDC’s former location, 4041 N. Richards Street in Milwaukee.

Those coming for tax preparation are able to enjoy free activities aimed at enhancing financial literacy. From 9:30 – 10:30 AM, attendees can join BMO Harris as they present a Home Buying Workshop, and Educators Credit Union will present a Credit Building Workshop from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Associated Bank will be on site throughout the event to educate people about banking products and relationships.

SDC will present How Your Financial Background Impacts Employment at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 AM to provide an understanding of how financial decisions and credit may affect the ability to secure employment.

Blood pressure screenings, credit reports, a Zumba exercise class offered by Walnut Way will all be offered at no cost. Free gift bags will be distributed to the first 30 taxpayers and complimentary food will be available (while supplies last). There will also be a raffle.

Super Saturday will take place at SDC’s former office located at 4041 North Richards Street. Free tax preparation and filing for qualified taxpayers will continue through April 18.

For more than 50 years, the Social Development Commission has operated as the Community Action Agency for Milwaukee County. SDC serves as a planner, coordinator, and provider of human service programs for low-income individuals and families residing in Milwaukee County. The agency is an intergovernmental commission and is governed by a board of 18 citizens from Milwaukee County, each of whom hold the title of “Commissioner.” For more information on SDC’s programs and services, visit cr-sdc.org.
