Social Development Commission (SDC) Seeks Candidates for Board Elections for Six Districts

The Social Development Commission recently fi led a lawsuit to keep the County from moving ahead with energy assistance contracts for UMOS and Community Advocates.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – February 9, 2016 – The Social Development Commission (SDC) is seeking candidates to fill six seats for the Board of Commissioners. Candidates will be up for election for the Community Representative seats that serve on behalf of six districts comprised of low-income residents living in Milwaukee County. Members of the community interested in having their name appear on the ballot must meet requirements for candidacy.

Those interested in being a candidate can obtain a candidate application forms and nomination papers from the Social Development Commission office located at 4041 N. Richards Street in Milwaukee. Candidate packets may be picked up Monday through Friday between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Interested candidates must provide photo identification and proof of address.

To qualify as a candidate, an individual is required to be 18 years of age or older and have maintained residency in the district they wish to represent for at least ten days prior to the election. Candidates are required to obtain at least 200 signatures from residents within their district. False signatures will be discounted. Collection of additional signatures is encouraged.

District maps can be viewed on the home page of SDC’s website, www.cr-sdc.org, by clicking 2016 Board Elections.
Candidates meeting signature requirements must submit notarized papers and signatures to SDC’s office on Richard Street by 5:00 PM on Friday, March 4. Following signature verification, individuals that meet eligibility will be notified by March 7. The names of candidates with completed paperwork will appear on the ballot for the election held Friday, April 8.

For more than 50 years, the Social Development Commission has operated as the Community Action Agency for Milwaukee County. SDC serves as a planner, coordinator, and provider of human service programs for low-income individuals and families residing in Milwaukee County. The agency is an intergovernmental commission and is governed by a board of 18 citizens from Milwaukee County, each of whom hold the title of “Commissioner.” For more information on SDC’s programs and services, visit cr-sdc.org.
