Capitol Report
By State Representative, Leon D. Young
I took the occasion to watch Scott Walker officially announce his candidacy for the White House last Monday in Waukesha.
The stage presentation was typical for declarations of this nature: the candidate appearing leisure attire, in front of a gaggle hand-picked supporters, while voicing their raucous approval of the candidate’s every utter.
In listening to Scott Walker hyperbolic rant bordering on blatant deception, it was hard to imagine that he was talking about the same state (Wisconsin), much less the same period in time.
According to Walker, under his adept leadership, Wisconsin is now firing on all cylinders and he wants to do the same for entire country.
But, let’s examine Walker’s real record:
• Took away collective bargaining rights for most state employees (Act 10).
• Failed miserably in creating the 250,000 new jobs that he promised in his first term.
• Rejected $810 million for a federal high speed rail project.
• Turned down federal money to expand Medicaid coverage.
This money would have insured 120,000 more residents, created 11,200 new jobs by 2017 and would have resulted in nearly $2.6 billion in additional federal spending in Wisconsin Legislature.
• Wisconsin ranks 38th in job growth and dead last in the nation new business start-ups and faces job growth that is only a fraction of the national average.
And, these are just a few of Walker’s misguided policy initiatives since taking office.
The governor claims he’ll “fight and win for you,” but that’s a blatant lie.
Just ask the poor, the infirmed, the elderly and the hard-working families of Wisconsin who have suffered (and continue to suffer) under Scott Walker’s tyrannical thumb.
