Dr. Wright is one of only three African-American veterinarians in Milwaukee county.

The reason for that, Wright said, is that many intelligent African-American college graduates decide to move on to medical school. Also, There are few accredited veterinarians in the United States – only 28.

Some of the most common ailments in the animals that Wright treats include allergies, obesity, ear infections and, of course, hairballs.

He claims to have encountered an exceptional amount of hairballs this summer.

“I see a lot of ears and rears,” said Wright.

The veterinarian had a few suggestions for Milwaukee residents to keep their pets healthy.

Since modern-day pets tend to live longer, they will need their teeth for a while. Therefore, owners should brush their pets’ teeth regularly. In order to avoid weight problems, owners should feed their pets a set amount of food, only at certain times.

In addition, Wright recommends that owners spay or neuter their pets.

Wright envisions his future much like the present. Fast forward twenty years, and you’ll likely find Wright continuing his work with small animals (possibly at a larger clinic).

For now, however, Wright encourages those who aspire to any career goal:

“I think people should do what they’re good at – do what they love.”
