Milwaukee Police are investigating the shooting of an 11-year-old girl that happened on the playground of Clarke Street School located at 28th and Clarke Streets shortly before 7 p.m. on May 21.

Preliminary information suggests that two individuals were shooting at each other when the child was caught in the crossfire and shot.

The child was conveyed to Children’s Hospital where she in undergoing treatment for serious injuries.

There are no suspects in custody and we ask that anyone with information call Milwaukee Police at 414- 935-7360.

The investigation of the May 21 shooting of the child on the playground at 28th and Clarke continues.

For clarification, the girl who was shot is 10-years-old, not 11 as we initially reported.

She continues to receive treatment at Children’s Hospital.

Milwaukee Police have identified one of the two suspects believed to be responsible and we are currently seeking that individual.

Despite what you may hear from some uninformed sources, there have been fewer homicides and non-fatal shooting incidents in Milwaukee in 2014 compared to the same period of time in 2013.

The year-to-date homicide total is 24 for 2014 compared to 29 at this point in 2013, and we have investigated 136 non-fatal shootings so far this year compared to 140 at this point in 2013.
