A new grant from the Families Moving Forward Coalition will help an SDC program help youth and families.

The funding support will assist SDC’s “Exploring Our Creativity- Our Choices Always Matter” project.

This effort will allow the agency’s Youth and Family Development Program (YFDP) to increase awareness of mental health and substance abuse challenges to youth as well as reduce stigma that is attached to it.

A variety of creative methods will help make participating young people more aware of their daily activity choices.

The project will utilize a range of tools such as Art Therapy, Music/Poetry/ Spoken Word, Mind & Body Therapies, and Comedy Improvisation Workshops.

The grant from the Families Moving Forward Coalition includes funding for two special events during the coming year include a Mental Health Awareness Fair in May and a Comedy Sports Improvisational Workshop for youth to be held as part of the program’s Back to School Rally planned for late summer or early fall.

The Families Moving Forward Coalition is a Milwaukee area community- based coalition of organizations that includes treatment providers, providers of other preventative and supportive services, and faith-based social services.

The grant to the SDC youth program is part of an overall prevention programming grant from Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division which is working to serve and reduce risk in the community.
