Support for free tax program

November 9, 2013

A program that provides free tax preparation for thousands of Milwaukee County residents has gotten financial support from the IRS.

The Internal Revenue Service has awarded an $80,000 grant to the Milwaukee Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The program also was supported earlier this fall with a grant announced by the Forest County Potawatomi Community Foundation.

The VITA program operates from Social Development Commission sites plus other locations across the county, filling out and filing electronically federal and state tax returns at no charge.

During the last tax season, VITA sites filed more than 15,000 tax returns that brought back more than $14-million in tax refunds and credits to Milwaukee area residents.

The VITA program is currently recruiting volunteers to help in the coming tax season.

Tax preparers, greeters and other positions will be needed for the program which will begin preparing taxes next January.

Training and certification sessions will be held beginning in December.

To learn how to be a volunteer for the VITA program, contact LaToya Jones at 414-906-2823.
