Rufus King alums take on Riverside alums to raise scholarship dollars

July 27, 2013

4th-annual scholarship flag football contest set for Saturday, July 27 at Custer Stadium

Alumni of Milwaukee Public Schools’ Rufus King International School and Riverside University High School will square off in flag football Saturday, July 27 to raise scholarship dollars for the schools’ students.

The 4th-annual scholarship flag football game set is set for Saturday, July 27 at 2 p.m. at Custer Stadium, located next to MPS’ School of Career and Technical Education, 5075 N. Sherman Boulevard, Milwaukee 53209. Tickets are $3 with the funds going to the alumni foundations at both schools for scholarship purposes. Prior years’ events have raised more than $2,000, a total organizers hope to grow exponentially.

This year’s event will be hosted by Mary Stoker Smith of WITI-TV (Fox 6). Half-time ceremonies this year will recognize MPS alumni and community leaders for their contributions to the city of Milwaukee, including YMCA’s Sponsor-A-Scholar program, Vincent Lyles, Dr. Sheri Johnson, Tammy Belton-Davis, Muhibb Dyer and LaNelle Ramey.

The game was created by Drs. Demond Means and Ramel Smith, graduates of Riverside and Rufus King, respectively. Dr. Means currently serves as superintendent of the Mequon- Thiensville School District. Dr. Smith is a psychologist with Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin.

“This game started off as a 20th reunion celebration for the class of 1990,” Dr. Smith said. “However, it has turned into a celebration of MPS alumni doing great things. Alumni from several decades will play and share in good times together; honor worthy people who have dedicated themselves to serving MPS and Milwaukee; and raise money for worthy programs that benefit the students of MPS.”

Rufus King International School offers students the International Baccalaureate program, which was developed for the children of diplomats to ensure they have access to the highest quality education as they move around the world. Rufus King was recently ranked the #1 high school in the Milwaukee region by the Washington Post and the #2 high school in the state by U.S. News and World Report. The school’s 2013 graduates are off to college destinations including Columbia University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Vassar College and many others.

Riverside University High School offers students more honors and Advanced Placement courses than any area high school along with rigorous Project Lead the Way coursework in engineering and biomedical sciences. The school boasts a 90-plus-percent four year graduation rate that exceeds the state average and its students can take advantage of the school’s proximity to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee by enrolling in courses there. Riverside’s 2013 graduates are off to colleges and universities including Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Mount Mary College, the United States Military Academy (West Point), the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee and many others.
