Nationally renowned educator, school psychologist, therapist and historian Dr. Umar Johnson will open his series of Milwaukee engagements at the Milwaukee Brotherhood of Firefighters Hall, 7717 West Good Hope Road, on Thursday, April 11, 2013, beginning at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5 p.m.
“Still Separate and Unequal: The Mis-Education Machine Exposed” will be his presentation theme on this occasion and his newly published book, “The Psycho-Academic Holocaust: The Special Education and ADHD Wars Against Black Boys” will be available for purchase.
On Friday, April 12, a Parents Only Workshop is scheduled for Readers Choice Bookstore, 1950 North Martin Luther King Drive, from 1 to 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required for his talk on “Navigating the School System that Seeks to Destroy Black Children” along with a fee of $20 which includes the purchase of his book.
An informal “Meet & Greet” will follow at Coffee Makes You Black, 2803 North Teutonia Avenue, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
A blood relative of Frederick Douglas, the great Black abolitionist and orator, this highly acclaimed cast member of “Hidden Colors” series 1 and 2 is a former Minister of Education for the Marcus Garvey Movement, the Universal Negro Improvement Association and the African Communities League. A political scientist and consultant to families, educators, mental health professionals and to schools throughout the country, the 37 year-old is considered to be one of the most popular faces and voices focusing upon the proper education and development of African American children.
As a school psychologist, Johnson evaluates pupils ages 3 to 21 in an effort to determine if they have any educational disabilities and in need of educational services. He is known for his expertise in helping schools and parents modify challenging behaviors that can ultimately lead to disruptive behavior disorder diagnosis in Black boys.
He has presented before embassies, museums, schools, universities, churches, correctional facilities, stadiums, international audiences and community centers and is cited as an authority on the education of African American children and on mental health in the Black community.
The Thursday Firefighters presentation and the Meet & Greet at Coffee are free and open to the public. Vendor spaces are available at the Firefighters Hall event.
