Fatherhood Summit – Keeping dads healthy

October 13, 2012

Dr. Lester Carter to be honored

A special award honoring a pillar in the Milwaukee community. Dr. Lester L. Carter will be recognized for his impact and achievements at the 7th Annual Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit.

Dr. Carter has served the Milwaukee community for more than 40 years dispensing traditional pharmaceutical treatments as well as herbal remedies. Dr. Carter has touched the lives of literally thousands of people through his work out of his pharmacy located at 24th and Burleigh. He is well-known throughout Milwaukee for his extensive knowledge and patient approach to anyone coming to his store. There are countless Milwaukee residents who each have their own story about how Dr. Carter impacted their lives through his longtime work.

The presentation to Dr. Carter will take place during an award ceremony on Sat., Oct. 13 from 8:15 am to 9:30 am at the Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit at Destiny Youth Plaza located at 7210 N. 76th Street. This award ceremony for Dr. Carter will be conducted by City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative and SDC representatives.

The Summit will focus on healthier fathers mean healthier families and that, in turn, means a healthier community. That is the philosophy behind the 7th Annual Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit being held Friday and Saturday, October 12th and 13th. The free two day event is being staged at Destiny Youth Plaza from 7:30am to 3 pm. It is being organized by the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative in partnership with the Social Development Commission.

The theme of the Fatherhood Summit is Men’s Health… not only physical health but also mental, spiritual, financial and relationship health. A series of workshops providing valuable information will cover those areas for participating fathers. In addition, a variety of free health screenings will be held on site.

A Job and Resource Fair will also be provided allowing men to access a wide range of resources including job training resources, employment opportunities, housing, education, finances, and public safety. In addition, Child Support case workers will be available to talk with fathers who are in arrears with their support and Driver’s License Recovery staff and private attorneys will be able to help men seeking to recover their licenses.

A by-invitation dinner recognizing the positive role of grandfathers will be held at 5:30 pm Friday night at Destiny with middle school and high school age students reading essays they wrote to honor their grandfathers.
