New launch piers to be installed at three Milwaukee County Parks

August 4, 2012

Milwaukee County Parks announces that with funding of the 2011 Waterways Commission Grant which helped fund 3 separate projects for the replacement of the launch piers, will begin at McKinley Marina on Friday July 27, 2012. Along with the launch piers at McKinley Marina being replaced South Shore Park and Bender Park will as well. The new piers are expected to be installed at all three facilities on or before August 4, 2012.

In 2011 Milwaukee County received funding from the Wisconsin Waterways Commission to renovate and modernize the launch piers. The projects are expected to cost over $271,000. Of this total amount the Waterways Commission funds 57 percent of the project, while the remaining 43 percent is funded by Milwaukee County. The Milwaukee County Parks Department has worked with the fishing and boating community to determine the needs of the user groups prior to construction and installation of the new piers. The old piers will be reused, salvaged or recycled.

The Recreational Boating Funds Program is administered by the Department of Natural Resources and Supervised by Wisconsin Waterways Commission. The Commission is composed of five members representing Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, the Mississippi River, Lake Winnebago Watershed, and Wisconsin’s inland waters. The Commission reviews the project applications, establishes project feasibility, determines the priority of projects, and determines the rate of cost sharing for projects.

The Recreational Boating Facilities Program, authorized under section 30.92, Wisconsin Statues, encourages the development of recreational boating facilities and related activities by providing state cost sharing assistance to governmental units and qualified lake associations.
