County Board Chairwoman Marina Dimitrijevic and County Executive Chris Abele spent the two days this week meeting with candidates from the public and private sectors interested in serving on the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) District Board. Chairwoman Dimitrijevic released the following statement after nine individuals were appointed to serve on the MATC Board:
“I thank the entire Appointment Committee, including County Executive Abele and the County Board Chairs from Ozaukee and Washington Counties, for their collaborative approach to technical training in southeastern Wisconsin. Their votes demonstrate a commitment to continuity of service for Board members and will provide a smoother transition to the State-mandated governance model. Milwaukee County did not support the State legislation changing the makeup of the MATC Board, but today’s outcome makes the best of a difficult situation.
“The makeup of the new Board increases Latino representation and reflects the diverse students and residents the District serves.
My top priority, throughout this process, has been affordable and accessible technical education during these challenging economic times. These appointments will enhance our local economy and help preserve MATC’s television licenses with the Federal Communications Commission.
“Today, I call on the Legislature to ensure that Milwaukee County’s representation, on both the MATC Board and future Appointment Committees, is proportionate to its financial contribution and number of students. I am proud to have worked as a team with the County Executive on this important collaborative this week.”
